When you begin researching treatment, the price is often one of the first things you look for.

A published figure can give you a starting point. It cannot, by itself, tell you what your care will involve or what the complete journey will cost.

A useful comparison starts with two questions: are you comparing the same treatment, and do the quotes cover the same services?

Make sure the procedures are comparable

Treatment names can cover different approaches and levels of care.

For example, a quote for one knee replacement is different from a quote for both knees. Dental implant costs may refer to a single implant or an entire arch. A fertility quote needs to identify the proposed treatment stages and any separately charged elements.

Ask each provider to describe the procedure clearly, including the technique, implant or device where relevant, and the planned hospital stay.

If the proposed approaches differ, ask the specialists to explain why before treating the prices as equivalent.

Look inside the hospital package

Request an itemised written quote showing what is included.

Depending on the treatment, questions may cover:

• Consultations and pre-treatment assessment
• Surgeon, specialist and anaesthetist fees
• Theatre or procedure-room charges
• Implants, devices and consumables
• Tests and investigations
• Room category and planned hospital nights
• Medicines, nursing and routine inpatient care
• Follow-up appointments

A package description should also explain its limits. “Hospital care included” is less useful than knowing which services and how many nights the quote covers.

Separate treatment costs from journey costs

A hospital quote and a complete travel-and-care quote may have different scopes.

Check accommodation outside hospital, meals, airport transfers, local transport, companion arrangements and coordination services individually.

Before paying a deposit, ask how the price could change.

What happens if further investigations are needed? What if the specialist recommends a different procedure after an in-person assessment? How are additional hospital nights, appointments or accommodation charged?

Understand a published price difference

A difference between two advertised prices is a comparison of those figures. It is not automatically the amount you will save on your complete journey.
